STOP PRESS: The first & second of our new leaflets are ready to test! Check out Walk Two - Woods, Buffalo and Hill Forts and Walk Three - Limekilns and Quarries now!

Vote for this walk!As you know we produced our first walk leaflets with very welcome help from The Ramblers Association (Holywell Ramblers), , Walkabout Flintshire and other groups to help you take your own self-guided walks on Halkyn Mountain. The first leaflet is available now so press the image to the right to see our first route which is a circular walk of up to 5.75 miles in PDF format. This walk gained the prestigous title of one of the top ten walks in the UK with MyFavouritePubWalks.com !

We are building a new series of walk leaflets, reworking the first above and creating a second and third leaflet. We will make early versions of it available to you as soon as we can. The first walk will be called Walk One - Halkyns Four Peaks and is a reworking of the original circular walk of 5.75 miles. The second walk will be a shorter circular walk of around 3.5 miles called Walk Two - Woods, Buffalo and Hill Forts which will take in some different terrain and part of the Wat's Dyke Way, more of which later. The third walk will be a longer circular walk of 9.5 miles and called d Walk Three - Limekilns and Quarries.

One of the interesting things about these walks is that they share the common feature of the Hill Fort of Moel-y-Gaer. This provides the option to string more than one walk together, for intance, Walk Two + Walk Three is about 12 miles as they share a part of the route in common. Each of the maps will be to scale and list as much inforation as we can of the flora, fauna, geology and anything else we can find of interest.

We have lots of ideas for other walks and the exciting prospect of providing postcards and prints of features, sights and views found on the walks. We've five prints for sale in the pub at the moment.

Watch this space! In the meantime, the maps are available by clicking he icons if you click READ MORE, we'll add the basic text and bird lists as soon as we can. We'll also try to include as much of interest as we can & make the leaflets available online & in hardcopy from the Blue Bell Inn.

Copies of the walks and the countryside code are available from the Blue Bell Inn, Halkyn and its web site where you can also get a route map to the pub.
First Walk Leaflet developed & produced by the Ramblers’ Association, Countryside Council for Wales, Walkabout Flintshire and the Blue Bell Inn, Halkyn.

Important Notes for Walkers:

  • Please keep dogs on a short lead at all times.
  • Wear good quality shoes or boots & keep to recognised paths & tracks.
  • Follow the Countryside Code.
  • Take particular care near old mine workings. The mountain is covered with old, deep & vertical mine shafts in various stages of repair. Report re-opened shafts to the Grosvenor Estate Office 01244 684400.

We would like to thank the Countryside Council for Wales for helping us put together the first walk and their help in surveying the new set of walks to allow us to add some fantastic detail to the text and maps.

Our thanks also to the RSPB for allowing us to use their reference links.

We would also like to thank very much The Ramblers Association for helping put together the first draft of the first walk and Holywell Ramblers for getting us started on walking on Halkyn Mountain.
