Springfield Cider are based in Llangovan, Monmouthshire. Old Barn Cider is a medium cider at 7.2% abv and is a strong and fruity cider, made from a blend of late season Browns and mid season Dabinetts grown in the Old Barn orchard.
Suitable for vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs.
The bush orchards at Springfield Farm were planted in 1998 and Springfield Cider began production in 2004 under the management of Alan & Jo Wordsworth.
To ensure that the cider orchards are of direct benefit to the local community, 25 acres have been stock-fenced to allow seasonal grazing by local sheep farmers. No chemical sprays are used and natural habitats and headlands are being encouraged and extended wherever possible. Dedicated bridle ways have also been created to allow safe, off-road riding for the neighbouring Andalusian horse stud that Alan and Jo help to run. (See links page on www.springfieldcider.co.uk for further information).
It was always going to be hard to resist the urge to make our own cider and Springfield Cider was born in 2004 using apples drawn exclusively from our own orchards. The results were very encouraging and we expanded production to 3,500 litres in 2005, gaining equal 3rd prize with two of our ciders (Old Barn and Farmhouse) at the 2006 Welsh Cider Festival.
Our cider is made from carefully selected and hand-picked apples. The apples are allowed to mature and are then thoroughly washed in our own natural spring water before being pressed in a traditional way to produce ciders that are completely unadulterated, unfiltered, unpasteurised, and have no added yeast, chemicals, water, S02 or sugar.
