Why did we do it...
During another hilarious Friday teatime discussion the subject turned to school playground games and went something like this, [Him] "conkers," [Her] "sorry?" [Him] "Have you ever played conkers," [Her] "No I've never played conkers, but I've played tennis".
Clearly something was lacking in The Girl's education, especially as conkers have just been voted the greatest playground game. So here we were with our own, just for fun, conker championships to enlighten the inexperienced and raise funds for a worthy cause; the Halkyn Pensioners Christmas Party.

First you needed to know how to play...
RISK ASSESSMENT: We've done a risk assessment [it took all of 1/2 a second] - yes there is a risk - but hey, you're all grown up now and can take your own decisions about playing. We don't accept any risk for any injury, howsoever caused!
We will endevour to provide some conkers, string and a young fellow with a drill, the rest is up to you.
Bringing your own conkers is entirely acceptable but your conker will start as a non-er. Do ask the owners permission if you are planning to go collecting somewhere other than your own garden.
You can enter a new conker as many times as you like but only one conker in play at a time - if your conker has been destroyed you can start again with a fresh one.
There will be a small charge of 50p per conker entered with all proceeds going towards the Halkyn Pensioners Christmas Party.
You will get a sheet of paper with which to track your conkers progress, with the loser's sheet being handed to the winner to help them prove their score [staff will adjudicate if necessary].
The winner will be declared at dusk or once all challengers have been conkered!
WINNER: This is for fun! Ohh allright then, we'll present a cup to the person with the highest scoring conker.
TRIVIA: The first recorded game of conkers was held in 1848 and the world
record for a conker is over a 5000er. There is a little bug known as
the Chestnut Leaf Miner which stunts conker growth but we've had no reports of it this far north.
