Stop Press and just in time for a great Christmas present: We've now 14 different Treasure Trails for you to enjoy. As well as the Halkyn Treasure Trail below, we also have Treasure Trails for Caernarfon, Conwy, Denbigh, Holywell, Ironbridge, Mold, Llandudno, Llangollen, Ruthin, Rhuddlan, St. Asaph and Wrexham!
HALKYN MOUNTAIN WOODS AND HILLFORTS
We have teamed up with Treasure Trails North Wales to bring you a brand new and fun outdoor experience for all the family on Halkyn Mountain.
The Trail is based on and around Halkyn Mountain which is part of Halkyn Common, an ancient common covering about 2,000 acres overlooking the Dee Estuary, the Cheshire Plains and The Clwydian Range.
YOUR MISSION...
Dr Benton Mayhem is at it again. He has hidden a device in the old workings of the Marquis Lead Mine in Halkyn which will release a pungent gas to make all the real ale in the local pubs taste like vinegar and therefore ruining the annual Real Ale Trail. M wants you 006 to help Special Agent Belle Blue to solve the clues that have inadvertently been left on and around Halkyn Mountain and de-activate the device to save the world famous Real Ale Trail.
The Trail takes you through woodland, up to an iron-age hillfort and across open grazing land with magnificent views. Halkyn is an ancient settlement mentioned in the Doomsday Book but was developed during the 18th and 19th century lead-mining booms.
Our Treasure Trail testers John & Lorna said "let us know when the trail is out, it was so good we'll buy one for ourselves!"
The Trail is about three and a half miles long and should take you about three hours to complete. The ground can be quite wet in places so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. The Trails starts and ends at The Blue Bell Inn.
Get your Treasure Trails from the Blue Bell Inn where part of the price includes a £2 donation to North East Wales Search & Rescue (NEWSAR)! |

Our free guided walks are run here (can you run a walk?) by Troedio Clwyd Walks who, with their wonderful volunteer walk leaders guide us over field and mountain on different walks every week!
Fun Facts! Did you know that we've had well over 1,000 walking events at the Blue Bell Inn? If we multiply the number of walks by the number of walkers by the distance walked, on an average year we do over 10,000 miles a year! In fact we've walked the equivalent of more than twice around the planet since we started!
Don't forget our annual pilgrimage up on to the Moel-y-Gaer Hill Fort on Mid-Summer's Day each year, this year we meet here at 9:15pm for a 10:15pm sunset on the tops. So we've a date on Thursday 21st June at 9:15pm!
We have both regular weekly and monthly walks and also sneak in the occasional special walk too. Here they are:
- 7pm every Wednesday evening April to Sept, 3 to 4 miles of leisurely walking taking in the sunset with John & Vicky.
- 2pm every Thursday, 90 minutes of brisk walking with John & Vicky.
- 10:30am every Saturday, two walks, 3 to 4 miles of leisurely walking with Jill & June or 4 to 5 miles of brisk walking John & Vicky all ably backed up by a multitude of other walk-leaders.
- 10:30am every 3rd Saturday in the month, 6 to 7 miles of leisurely walking with Bob & Trish.
- 1pm every 1st Saturday Nordic Walking, we'll provide sticks & a trained instructor!
- 11am every 1st Sunday (from April to September) come for a 60min history walk and learn about your mountain!
If you can't make our free guided walks then how about using one of our free self-guided walks here? There's no excuse now as you can do one of these walks any time you like! If you want a bit more of a challenge why not try our new Treasure Trail?
You'll need appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather and to be prepared for a great time, lovely chat and good company, finishing off at the Blue Bell Inn for refreshment and a winter warm by the fire.
We've some good links to walking equipment suppliers here and some others to those that organise walks here. Check out the Weather, Traffic and How to Find Us or Contact/Find Us if you do decide to visit and we'll work out a route from you to us! Please follow the countryside code. |

As you know we produced our first walk leaflets with very welcome help from The Ramblers Association (Holywell Ramblers), Walkabout Flintshire and other groups to help you take your own self-guided walks on Halkyn Mountain. Three leaflets are available now in PDF format.
The first walk will be called Walk One - Halkyns Four Peaks is a reworking of our original circular walk of 5.75 miles. The second walk is a shorter circular walk of around 3.5 miles called Walk Two - Woods, Buffalo and Hill Forts which will take in some different terrain and part of the Wat's Dyke Way. The third walk is a longer circular walk of 9.5 miles and called Walk Three - Limekilns and Quarries.
Walk one gained the prestigious title of one of the top ten walks in the UK with MyFavouritePubWalks.com! In fact all three walks gained the accolade of appearing in the Twenty One Top Dog Walks and Walk two gained a place as on of the Best Walks for 2009 by the Sunday Times!
