The Locale Scheme in the County of Conwy is now in full swing.
The idea is for local pubs to promote the beers from local
breweries thus reducing the number of ‘beer miles’ a beer has
to travel to get from the brewery to the pub door. There are
nine local North Wales breweries for pubs to choose from:-
Brewery
Location
Conwy
Conwy
Facer’s
Flint Mountain
Great Orme
Glan Conwy
Jolly Brewer
Wrexham
McGiverns
Wrexham
Bragdy’r Nant
Llanrwst
North Wales Brewery
Abergele
Plassey
Eyton, Wrexham
Purple Moose
Porthmadog
Several pubs have now signed up
to the new Locale scheme designed to promote local breweries
products. One of the first to sign up was
Ye Olde Mail
Coach in Conwy. There are two handpumps here, one
is dedicated to the Conwy Brewery and the other to
Purple Moose with Dark Side of the Moose proving to be
very popular and this rotates with Glaslyn and Madog’s Ale.
Also in Conwy, the Castle Hotel has three pumps and one
or all of these feature Conwy beers such as Castle Bitter,
Honey Fayre and Mulberry Dark. In Old Colwyn, the
Cuckoo always serves Conwy Welsh Pride and sometimes
another one such as Honey Fayre. A Conwy beer can always be
found at the Saracen’s Head in Cerrig-y-Druddion.
It could be Welsh Pride or Celebration Ale.
Over in Carpel
Curig you can always get a Conwy beer at Cobden’s
Hotel. Mulberry Dark is often on and possibly Welsh Pride
and they also have Cobden’s Ale a 4.1% bitter brewed
especially for them by Conwy Brewery. The
Virginia
in Llanfairfechan always has a Conwy beer, usually
Welsh Pride. Both Wetherspoon’s pubs in the area, the
Palladium in Llandudno and the Picture House
in Colwyn Bay always have a Conwy beer on and in
Upper Colwyn Bay at the Pen-y-Bryn you’ll always
find a local beer.A Great Orme beer can
also be found at the Queen’s Head in Glanwydden.
It could be Orme’s Best, Celtic Dragon or Three Feathers, while
at the The Penrhyn Arms Penrhynside real
loacl cider is available.
The
Groes at T’yn y Groes always severs Orme’s Best.
The
owners of the Groes are related to Great Orme owner and
head brewer Jonathan Hughes so there’s a real family
connection there. In fact the brewery is less than five miles
away making it the closest drop off point. In Llandudno
the Cottage Loaf always has Celtic Dragon on and at a
recent beer festival they had no less then eight local beers
with the full range from Great Orme and Purple Moose and one
from Nant.
The Valentine in
Llanddulas features at least one beer from Facers
such as Flintshire Bitter or Dave’s Hoppy.
In Llanrwst, the
Pen-y-Bryn concentrates on his local brewery which is
Bragdy’r Nant. There are two handpumps here and at least
one will feature a Nant beer such as Mochyn Hapus, Pen Dafad,
Chawden Aur or Gran’s Lamb
In Trofarth, the
Holland Arms is now selling beers from three different
local breweries. There are three handpumps there, one is
dedicated to a Conwy beer such as Welsh Pride or Honey Fayre,
one if for a Great Orme ale like Orme’s Best or Celtic Dragon
and the third is for Purple Moose: Glaslyn or Dark Side of the
Moose is featured here.
So, now there’s no excuse for
not sampling an ale from your local brewery.
