Walking the way to Health (WHI) is the largest national body promoting and setting the standards for led health walks. It is a joint initiative between Natural England and the British Heart Foundation.

WHI aims to encourage people, particularly those who take little exercise, to do regular short walks in their communities. We support over 525 local health walk schemes – find your nearest using our Walk Finder.

NEW WALK FINDER LAUNCHED: WHI is all about health walks so it comes as no surprise that Walk Finder is the most popular part of our website. More than 14,000 of you visit Walk Finder each month! You have told us how useful it is when you are searching for a health walk scheme in your area and we hope the launch of a new, improved version will make this even easier. You can now search for a health walk scheme by postcode or browse by region - see the green box on the right.

WHI Learning Network
The WHI Learning Network is for volunteers and professionals who are already involved in health walks. On the Network you can:

  • share good practice;
  • air problems or views;
  • learn more about walking for health and the various strategies which influence the initiative; and
  • communicate with other members working in this field.

You will need to register to become a member of the Learning Network.
