ABOUT US
Chester Cycling Campaign is fighting for a better, greener city for all. Chester is choking with traffic
jams and pollution from cars , yet one in four of these car journeys is less than two miles. Cycling is
cheap, fast, and clean. It is one part of the solution to these problems.
We know that people want to use their bikes more, but they just don't feel safe
on the road. Chester Cycling Campaign is working with local councils to
get serious about encouraging cycling in Chester.
The main focus of the coming year will be on maximising the benefits for local cyclists following an incredible
year in 2008 which saw Chester benefit from over £6 million in cycle funding from Connect2 and
Cycle Demonstration Town status.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Chester Cycling Campaign supports the Government's aim to quadruple bike use by 2012, and to integrate cycling with walking and public transport.
The Campaign's overall aims in the longer term are to fight for:
- 100 kms of designated cycle routes
- 20 mph speed limits
- safe routes to schools
- better city centre access for cyclists
- bike contra-flows in one-way streets
- bike parking in every shopping area
- free carriage of bikes on trains
The Campaign's immediate objectives for 2008 are to:
- Write a letter to the press each month for publication
- Hold at least one Doctor Bike Session to assist with new membership
- Issue at least 6 press releases on cycling issues
- Provide comments on at least 20 planning applications or appeals to improve cycle facilities
- Encourage the City Council to maintain and improve cycle parking
- Actively support the Sustrans Connect2 project
- Campaign to improve Hoole Bridge/Railway Station access
- Improve North/South crossing of Chester City Centre for cyclists
- Reduce temporary closure of cycleways and to try to ensure that authorities take account of cyclists when planning roadworks
- Establish formal contact with the City and County Council for Cycling related matters
- Highlight the disparity of cycle mileage expenses paid by local major employers and the basis on which the rates are calculated
- Campaign for Cheshire West and Chester Council to have a dedicated team to promote the needs of cyclists
- Campaign for an application for Chester to be a Cycle Demonstration town
